The following information provides a brief summary of several unique technologies that we apply to medium and high voltage electrical equipment in order to determine insulation condition assessment while the equipment remains in service. We refer to these technologies as “No-Outage” or “On-Line” tests.

These technologies are combined in a specialized program that is best suited for your facility. By implementing this program, insulation problems can be eliminated and reliability increased.

Level I Partial Discharge Survey

Description:
The Level I partial discharge survey is a very efficient method to detect potential insulation problems within switchgear, switches, dry-type transformers, busduct and other equipment. This technology allows a large amount of equipment to be checked in a very short time. The results of this phase of testing will determine specific areas will that need further detailed analysis using Level II technology.

The Level I equipment is also a good safety tool for detecting potential problems before conducting switching activities.

Level II Partial Discharge Analysis

Description:
Level II analysis is used to identify and quantify partial discharge activity that was detected during Level I Surveys and is also the best method to determine the condition of cables and rotating apparatus. This phase of the testing is also performed while the equipment remains in service. This includes cable partial discharge in the suvey.

Advanced software records the equipment signals and analyzes the results in detail so that corrective actions can be recommended.

Corona Surveys

Description:
Corona surveys are used to pinpoint surface insulation defects and conductor problems. This technology is very good for inspecting outdoor substations or overhead transmission and distribution lines. This service may also help determine the specific location of surface defects in switchgear and other equipment.

Circuit Breaker Vibration Signature Analysis

Description:
This developing technology is used to determine circuit breaker condition during “first trip” operation. Sensors that detect vibration are applied to the circuit breaker just prior to a maintenance outage and the breaker is then tripped. Special software records the resulting waveforms which are then compared to our breaker waveform data library to detect problems related to mechanical defects.

The technology allows critical “first trip” timing information to be measured, which is the most important information related to breaker operation under real conditions. If not recorded, this critical “first trip” information is lost after the breaker is operated; therefore traditional breaker testing does not provide a true indication of breaker condition.

The information obtained by the recordings also provides critical “timing” information related to the breaker. Arc-flash incident and coordination calculations are based upon optimum breaker trip time characteristics. Without confirming the first trip breaker timing, these studies are invalid.
